The Muslim World Expands
In this unit we will learn about the expansion of the Muslim world and the growth of some of the different Muslim empires. We'll start out learning about the Ottoman Empire. We'll look at the geography of the empire, ghazis, the use of muskets and cannons, devshirme and janissaries. We'll also learn about Ottoman leaders, such as Osman, Orhan I, Murad II, Mehmed II, Selim the Grim, Salesman the Lawgiver and Selim II. The next section will focus on cultural blending and will examine the Safavid Empire. In regards to cultural blending, we'll look at the causes of cultural blending, including migration, religious freedom or conversion, trade and conquest. We'll also look at the results of cultural blending, including impacts on language, religion, types of government, arts and architecture. Next we'll examine the Safavid Empire. We'll learn about Ismail, Abbas the Great, Nadir Shah Afshar, the difference between sunni and shi'a, the capital of the empire at Esfahan, and events leading to the downfall of the empire. The last section will examine the Mughal Empire. We'll study the Turkish invasion of India, the capital of Delhi, Babur, Akbar, the blended culture of the region, Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan, Sikhs, Guru Arjun, Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal, Aurangzeb, and the decline of the empire.
