Empires in East Asia
In Unit 4 we'll start out by looking at the Tang and Song Dynasties in China. We'll learn about Wendi, Tang Taizong, Wu Zhao and General Taizu. This was an era of great prosperity and growth in China, and there were many new developments. We'll talk about the Silk Roads, social classes, development of the movable type and gun powder, and the civil service examination system. The next two sections focus on the Mongols. We'll learn about Genghis Khan's rule and the Mongol way of life. We'll also learn about Kublai Khan's rule and some of his accomplishments. In these sections, we'll also talk about how the Mongols ruled over their conquered territories, trade within the Mongol Empire and Marco Polo's role, and Mongol methods of warfare. The fourth section is about feudal powers in Japan. We'll learn about the Yamato Emperors, Japanese culture, shoguns and samurai warriors. The final section looks at many different kingdoms in Southeast Asia and Korea. We'll learn about the Khmer Empire and Angkor Wat, the Sailendra people and the temple at Borobudur, the Srivijaya and their capital of Palembang, the Dai Viet, and the Korean dynasties (Silla, Koryu, Choson or Yi) of the time period. We'll also learn about Tan'gun and Korean culture.
