An Age of Exploration and Isolation
In this unit we will learn about European exploration of the East, as well as China's and Japan's increased isolation. We'll start by talking about the reasons for European exploration, the technological developments allowing for more exploration, and Portugal's and Spain's role in exploration. We'll learn about people such as Prince Henry, Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, and Pope Alexander VI. We'll also learn about the Line of Demarcation, the Treaty of Tordesillas, the Dutch entrance into trade and exploration, the East India Company, and the entrance of Britain and France into the exploration of the East. We'll then learn about China during the time period. We'll learn about the Ming Dynasty, Hongwu, Confucian values, Yonglo, Zheng He's explorations, China's foreign relations, the Manchus and the Qing Dynasty, Kangxi, and life in China at the time. To finish, we'll talk about Japan during the time period. We'll learn about the Samurai control over Japan, the Daimyo, Oda Nobunaga, Seppuku, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Tokugawa Shogunate, life in Tokugawa Japan, Haiku, Kabuki and the Closed Country Policy.
