The Formation of Western Europe
Unit 6 will focus on the formation of western Europe. We will begin by looking at changes that took place within the Church. In this section, we will learn about the problems of the church, simony, the age of faith, reforms that took place within the Church, the papal curia, tithes, friars, cathedrals, and the shift from Romanesque architecture to Gothic architecture. Next, we'll study the crusades. We'll learn about some of the major people, like Alexius Comnenus, Robert Count of Flanders, Pope Urban II, Saladin, Philip II (Philip Augustus), Frederick I (Frederick Barbarossa), Richard I (Richard the Lion-Hearted), and Ferdinand and Isabella. We'll also learn about the goals of the crusades, the different crusades that were carried out and the outcomes of each, the Spanish Reconquista, inquisition, and the effects of the crusades. The third section will look at changes in medieval society, including changes in food production, the development of guilds, the Commercial Revolution, fairs, the revival of learning, the rise of universities, and Thomas Aquinas. In the fourth section, we'll learn about the development of England and France. We'll learn about people like Alfred the Great, Canute, King Edward the Confessor, William the Conqueror, Harold Godwinson, Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, John Softsword, Edward I, Hugh Capet, and Philip II (Philip Augustus). We'll also learn about the Battle of Hastings, the goals of English kings compared to the goals of French kings, common law, the Magna Carta, the Capetian Dynasty, and the development of English and French parliaments. The final section will focus on the Hundred Years' War and the plague. We'll learn about the Great Schism, including Pope Bonaface VIII, King Philip IV, Pope Clement V, Pope Urban VI, and Pope Clement VII. We'll also learn about John Wycliffe and Jan Hus and their arguments regarding the Church. We'll then look at the plague, it's impacts on Europe, and the amount of death that came with it. We'll finish by looking at the Hundred Years' War, including reasons for the war, the use of the longbow, key people like Edward III, Joan of Arc and Charles VII, and finish with the impacts of the war.
